Why do people go to counseling? People seek out counseling for the same reasons that they would go to their doctor for physical ailments. Counseling helps you heal emotional wounds in order to return to healthy functioning or change the way you think and feel altogether. Caring for your emotional health benefits not only your mind, but also your body, relationships and all other areas of your life. Every therapist is different with their own approach, training, and education. Finding a good therapist for you is just like any other relationship. It has to be a good fit. My education in Social Work teaches that every person is a part of a system, not just a diagnosis. Social Work teaches us that everyone has inherent strengths that are unique to them, deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, and are the expert on themselves and what they need. My approach is to see what modality fits you best or what you need in that particular session. I use many different skills and approaches, but here are the most common in my psychotherapy practice:
EMDREye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories (Shapiro, 1989a, 1989b). I use EMDR in typical 60 minute sessions as well as longer intensive sessions.

CBT Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a very common psychotherapy technique that helps a person restructure their thinking to be more helpful. |
Meditation and VisulizationMeditation and visualization are empowering tools to enhance consciousness and self-awareness and to focus the mind. Visualization is a healthy way of bringing positive energy into your mind, body and spirit, expanding your capacity for creativity.
